“I the King, do make it know that the principal farmers of the upper Douro and the good men of the city of Porto therein mentioned, did and gave orders to, with my royal consent form a Company which whilst competently sustaining the cultivation of the Upper Douro vineyards, should at the same time preserve their output in their natural purity, for the benefit of domestic and foreign trade”.

Real Companhia Velha was founded on the 10th of September 1756 by Royal Charter of King D. José I, under the auspices of his Prime Minister, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Count of Oeiras and Marquis of Pombal. Therefore, and being this the month of Real Companhia Velha’s 263º anniversary, this piece marks the start of its historic journey, has the document that founded the Company.
