Come and discover the object of the month and find out more about our history.

As we have already highlighted, there were several obstacles to being able to navigate the Douro River in national territory. In this context, the destruction of the Cachão da Valeira was one of the main works carried out by the Company, and took place between 1780 and 1792. The watercolour selected as object of month represents this area of the river that is now able to be navigated. It’s displayed in the Museum’s fourth exhibition part alongside with another watercolour that represents the Cachão da Valeira still intact, before it’s destruction.

We remind you that the exhibition area where this piece is displayed, highlights many of the public works carried out by Real Companhia Velha, as a chartered Company. Those public works developed and shaped the entire Douro region and the city of Porto itself.

Author
João Baptista Ribeiro

Material
Watercolour

Date
1810

Collection
Real Companhia Velha

Dimensions
Height: 64 cm x Length: 84,7 cm x Width: 4,7 cm

Peça do mês – dezembro, 2021 Todos os meses, o Museu da 1ª Demarcação destaca uma das peças da exposição permanente.
