Object of the Month - August 2020
Every month the Museum of the Oldest Appellation in the World highlights one of the many objects that are part of the collection shown in our permanent exhibition. Come and discover the object of the month and find out more about our history.
This basket from Quinta das Carvalhas, in Pinhão – Alijó, is characterized by its trapezoidal shape, which allows it to be transported by the worker supported on his shoulders. As the name implies, this object is used during the harvest period to assist in the transport of grapes. The item in question can carry up to 60 to 70 kilos of grapes.
The first exhibition area where this piece is on display, represents the agricultural tools that shaped the Alto Douro Wine Region, through the construction of the characteristic terraces. Here we can also find the harvest’s utensils, which transport us to memories referring to the knowledge and traditions of this region.
