Object of the Month - November 2021
Every month the Museum of the Oldest Appellation in the World highlights one of the objects that are part of the collection shown in our permanent exhibition. We invite you to discover the object of the month and find out more about our history.
Selected as the item for November, we highlight the sprayer. This agricultural tool was used for phytosanitary treatments in the vineyard. These treatments were used to control diseases and pests that affect the vineyards. We recall that from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, serious pests arose that plagued the Douro Wine Region, namely oidium in 1852, followed by mildew and phylloxera.
You can find the sprayer and other agricultural instruments that marked and shaped the Upper Douro Region’s landscape, displayed on the first part of the exhibition at the Museum of the Oldest Appellation in the World. Here, in addition to highlighting the agricultural tools, we present the motives that led to the establishment of the Company, in 1756.
