Along the River Douro, many obstacles made difficult it’s navigation. The demolition of these obstacles allowed the navigability of the Douro River as far as the Spanish border, strengthening the production of Port Wine in the Upper Douro region. The destruction of the Cachão da Valeira was one of several works undertaken by the Company, which took place between 1780 and 1792. The watercolor in question is displayed on the fourth exhibition section of our Museum, where the public works carried out by Real Companhia Velha are presented.
